Harri Puro wins the Art of Basware competition for young artists

Harri Puro's painting "Nothing Special" has won the international Art of Basware competition for young artists. The competition was arranged for the 17th time, and the theme this year was Every Action Counts. This year, artists submitted more than 380 paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, and video works.

In addition to the winner, 55 best of all submitted artworks will be publicly displayed as part of Helsinki Design Week until October 10th at Hotel Clarion Jätkäsaari in Helsinki, Finland.

The winner of the competition, Harri Puro, is a 29-year-old painter. He was born in Rovaniemi and is now studying fine arts at Turku Arts Academy. Art of Basware exhibition will display two of Puro's artworks.

"The win in this competition will give me more publicity at this stage of my artistic career. And of course the award enables me to buy a lot of art supplies for my work," Harri Puro says.

The winner was declared by a jury that included Seppo Fränti, an arts collector and a patron, Jouna Karsi, the Art of Basware winner 2007 and an artist, Jan Jämsén, artist and rock lyricist, as well as facility manager Mirja Nykänen and CFO Niclas Rosenlew from Basware. Jury thinks the competition held once again its high standards and considers it to be an interesting overview to the field of young artists.

"The winning work shows a connection to emotions, it really catches one’s attention in this display," says Seppo Fränti, member of the jury.
"It is interesting to follow artist’s career from the very beginning. We will certainly hear from Harri Puro in the future," he continues.

For Basware’s CFO Niclas Rosenlew, this was the first time in the Art of Basware jury.

"Overall, it was a fascinating experience for a financial nerd like me to get to look at hundreds of art works together with artists and experts. For Basware, supporting young artists is part of our corporate social responsibility. This also allows our staff and customers to enjoy wonderful art at our facilities around the world," Rosenlew says.

Basware purchases the winning work for EUR 5,000 for its own collection that consists of over a hundred art works. The collection also grows annually with other purchases. At the exhibition anyone can acquire promising artists' works and thus support the young artists. The exhibition is part of the Helsinki Design Week programme and it is open until October 10 at the Clarion Jätkäsaari hotel. The entrance is free of charge.

The winners of The Art of Basware competition include, among others, Reima Nevalainen and Tiina-Liisa Kaalamo.
