How to find out if your document is machine readable

To check whether your PDFs are valid or not, simply open your PDF-files and select some text. If you can select the text, then there is definitively text inside and the file is not an image. If you can now copy and paste this text into a text-editor (for example) and there is still the normal text visible, then everything should be all right with this PDF-file:

If the text is not readable, then there are the fonts missing in the PDF-file. Like this we cannot process the file anymore:

If the document has been scanned, you cannot select and copy the text. Scanned documents are just “pictures” and cannot be processed:
