While the private sector has benefited from the introduction of shared services since the early 1990s, using shared services within the Australian public sector has something of a mixed history. The notion of pooling resources from multiple departments into a single service centre offers great benefits in reducing costs, improving customer service and increasing visibility of spend across government.
