2013 reflections and a look ahead to the real-time connected economy

CEO, Basware Corporation

In December last year, I wrote that I was excited about 2014. Excited not just for Basware and our customers and partners, but for the industry itself which is showing some really interesting signs of huge opportunities to come during the next months.

To understand 2014, we need to look at 2013 and what that meant for our strategy, goals and vision. A number of things happened that led us to where we are today, and put us on the path we are on now.

The Basware Network grew significantly. We connected an increasing number of small and mid-sized companies, as well as large buyers and suppliers. At the end of the year, we had managed over 60 million transactions. Our performance in 2013 means we are on track to meet our objective of becoming the largest business commerce network, with 150 million transactions by the end of 2015.

In September, we announced the partnership with MasterCard. This partnership will transform cash flow for global organizations, and provide a much needed boost to the economy.

At our Basware Experience events, I talked to nearly 2,000 customers who gave me valuable feedback and insight into our business.

Building on this success, 2014 is going to be a big year for us all. We will become even more global with a new identity that reflects the evolution of our company and the industry around us.

Global trends of social, mobile, cloud and connected commerce will continue to impact businesses. We have already seen innovation in the payment sector for mobile banking customers through  Zapp App which has attracted several big banks to sign up.

Automation is the name of the game, and e-invoicing is increasingly coming of age. Today, 900,000 of our customer organizations are using e-invoicing. This has a significant impact on the way they manage cash flow.

Our partnership with MasterCard is a landmark event that accelerates the uptake of e-invoicing. It showcases some of the greatest innovation in payment models. Commerce will enter a new era as businesses are able to manage cash more efficiently while delivering increased speed, safety and control throughout their financial processes. The real-time economy will become a reality to many in the industry.

So, join me in celebrating what is sure to be a significant year for Basware, our network and the industry we live in.
