Young artists still have time to enter the competition until April 25
The Art of Basware is an annual international art competition for young artists under 30 years of age. This year will mark the 17th anniversary of the competition. The jury includes Bruce Oreck, the former US ambassador to Finland and a renowned business influencer.
"As a juror I get the privilege of assessing the impact of a visual work upon my own set of emotions. I do not see my role as one of judging technical skills - although those are a necessary part of being able to convey the artist’s message. Rather all I can really judge is whether any particular work of art touches me", Bruce Oreck says.
In addition to Mr. Oreck, the jury's international point of view is enriched by renowned artist and prominent art figure Anna Ruth, as well as Basware's Senior Vice President of Financing Services Ad van der Poel and Chief Marketing Officer Lars Madsen. The jury includes also this year artists Paula Holopainen and Raija Heikkilä from Finnish Painters' Union and Basware's Nordic Marketing Director Marika Kohonen.
“Thanks to its international reach and longevity, The Art of Basware art competition is practically the only opportunity of its kind that opens up new possibilities for young artists. To get your work displayed in connection with a significant competition is a great merit, and getting acquired to the company's art collection gives the young artist's self confidence a great boost", artist Paula Holopainen says.
"This art competition was born out of our will to promote young artists' career and development. We believe that there is a strong connection between innovation, determination, creativity, and networking", says Marika Kohonen from Basware.
Last year, almost 400 works entered the competition. The Art of Basware can be an important stepping stone for aspiring artists. One of them is 27-year-old Eero Selänne from Turku, Finland, who is attending the competition for the first time. "I have been concentrating on oil and acrylic painting for three years now. It is quite difficult for a young artist to get his or her work displayed in public, because it is hard to find visual arts competitions. Many galleries also require a formal art degree to be featured there. It would be great to be able to make a living with art at some point, but right now the most important thing is to get people see my paintings", Selänne says.
The international annual art competition was arranged for the first time already in 2000. This year's theme is "Lead the way". The winning entry will be purchased to Basware's art collection for a sum of 5,000 euros. Young artists can enter the competition until April 25, 2016.
The Art of Basware 2016 art exhibition opens on June 8, 2016 in Helsinki Music Centre and exhibits works which have been chosen to the final stage of the competition. The results of the 2016 competition will also be announced at the opening event. The exhibition is open to the public until June 28, 2016.
